One of the country’s top chief medical officers gave his clinical care trends for 2022, and – not surprisingly – predicted that the physician shortage would become even more acute.
Dr. Eric Eskioglu, chief medical and scientific officer at Novant Health in North Carolina, told HealthLeaders magazine that health care workforce shortages will be the most significant trend and included physician shortages in that forecast. Eskioglu says he expects more physicians will move to locum tenens assignments.
He also believes that physician burnout will accelerate this year.
Eskioglu said pay cuts and the COVID-19 pandemic are exacerbating both the physician shortage and physician burnout problems.
